Current Exhibition: BANNERS OF THE COUNTRY WOMEN'S INSTITUTES OF WAIHEKE ISLAND

Onetangi country women’s institute

Some time during the early 1950s, an Institute was also established in Onetangi. However, the records held by the Museum don’t give an exact date, but it was certainly before 1954, as there is a copy of the institute’s meeting programme for that year. At some stage after that, a banner was created. The records also contain references to it having been made by Mrs M.J. Philcox, but there is nothing definitive. However, one of the meeting programmes for the Onetangi Institute refers to a forthcoming “demonstration of ‘felt marquetry’ (presumably applique) given by Marge Philcox.” As this is one of the techniques used on the banner, it’s probably safe to assume that she was involved in its creation.
